TMT bars can become corrosion resistant using specific techniques. TMT bar manufacturers in India follow a multi-step process that includes quenching, self-tempering, and annealing. We add water to instantly cool the TMT bars fresh from the mill stand jets during quenching. This cooling process causes them to form a hard outer layer known as “martensite,” with excellent corrosion resistance. TMT bars are also zinc-coated in areas with high moisture content to make them more corrosion-resistant.
The Manufacturing Process Of The TMT Bar
Chemical composition and the thermal treatment give Steel a wide range of properties when changing its microstructure. Manufacturers make rebar from various microstructures that give it both strength and flexibility. It has a challenging phase called martensite at the Periphery.
Although there is a quench in the outer layer, the inner core of the cross-section remains hot and, at higher temperatures, is in the austenitic phase. As the bar cools, heat flows from the center to the surface, causing the cooling rate to vary across its cross-section. This is the process of self tempering. Thus, the microstructure varies in cross-section, with solid and tough martensite in the surface layer of the bar. Then there is an intermediate layer of Martensite and Bainite and a soft Ferrite and pearlite microstructure of the core.
This process relieves any thermal stress generated in martensite during quenching. After this, the TMT bars require atmospheric cooling. This is essential to compensate for the temperature difference between the soft inner core and the tough outer shell. The inner core of the TMT bar remains soft, giving it superior ductility. The rebar is corrosion-resistant and weldable because of this one-of-a-kind manufacturing technique and the absence of cold stress.
These bars are best for general concrete reinforcing structures, bridges and flyovers, dams, thermal and power plants, industrial facilities, high-rise buildings, and other superstructure-based applications, as they come from the highest grade prime billets.
